SR58 - Burying The Lede?

The Lorain Morning Journal has more gory details about Matthew Barrett's cover up of those pictures that were shown to high school stodents now 7 months ago that eventually led to his resignation last month.

One interesting detail is that at least one woman sent Barrett a picture at his request:

Investigators discovered e-mail accounts were registered to Miraldi and Barrett, a law firm in Lorain where Barrett practices law, as well as private citizens, the reports stated.

On March 27, Norwalk detectives visited the 38-year-old Amherst woman who sent some of the images. The following day, detectives interviewed the 39-year-old Bloomville woman.

''She advised Matt asked her for them,'' the report stated.

''I asked (the woman) what Matt said to her to convince her to send the pictures. (The woman) advised he told her he missed her and wanted to see her and things like that,'' the report stated.

The Bloomville woman told police she met Barrett in 2004 at the Seneca County Fair while he was campaigning, the report stated.

The Bloomville woman told police she initially began speaking with Barrett about politics and education while he was campaigning for office, according to the report.

''She advised she met Matt for dinner in Tiffin. She advised Matt gave her tickets to a Browns game. (The woman) advised that is when the relationship started,'' the report stated.

The relationship. All rather unpleasant stuff to have spread across the pages of a newspaper for Barrett's family to deal with.

However, this little bit of information is what interests me most (emphasis mine):

House Democrats are in the process of selecting a replacement to fill out the remainder of Barrett's term of office. That replacement may, or may not, also be the person chosen to run as the Democratic candidate for the 58th District seat in the November election.

May or may not?

Under what circumstances would the party appoint someone who wouldn't be running for reelection now less than 6 months away?

Perhaps it's a throw away line from the reporter, perhaps not. We'll see.
