John and Elizabeth Edwards Slip Further Into Obscurity
Let me state this for the record. I was never one of those people who were impressed with John Edwards. I had followed his short political career and to me he always seemed cold and calculating. To win the North Carolina Senate seat he took positions that were completely at odds with the positions he holds now. To me, he always seemed like a blow dried talking head who was looking for the shortest distance between two points.
When he ran for President in 2004, I was hoping that he would not get the nomination. When he was chosen as John Kerry's running mate he was a huge disappointment, not even able to carry his home state. And to be quite honest, listening to a multimillionaire talk about poverty while he does work for a hedge fund is like expecting David Duke to speak out on behalf of civil rights. It just seems completely disingenious.
I caught this story over at Political Wire which states that neither John nor Elizabeth Edwards will endorse before the North Carolina primary today. Good. Regardless of the fact that neither of them is a superdelegate I dont think their endorsement would have made any difference anyway. I dont think there is some guy sitting around in Raleigh saying "Darn..I don't know who to vote for. What would John Edwards do?"
What I found really hilarious was this:
On the eve of the North Carolina primary, John and Elizabeth Edwards spoke to People magazine and pointed out things they both like and dislike about Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama.
I suppose they think that John McCain will do a better job on their issues? And then there is this:
Bottom line: "The couple said they will not endorse either remaining candidate, saving their political capital for their own causes - his, fighting poverty; hers, fighting for universal health care."
Their political capital? He's a former one term Democratic Senator from North Carolina. Tom Eagleton has more capital and he's dead. Please. Lets get through the 2008 campaign so we can forget about these two and move on.
He's not likely to have a chapter in the new and revised version of Profiles in Courage.
However, Edwards did do one significant thing in his political career and that was ridding us of Lauch Faircloth.
